Tribal Health

A district-wide sample survey revealed that 15% of population carried the sickle cell gene and nearly 1% had the severe disease (1987)

SEARCH realised that the tribal population, due to its different genetic, geographic and cultural characteristics, needed a different approach for health care.

SEARCH developed a unique tribal friendly hospital and participatory program of tribal health care.

The Government of Maharashtra bestowed a state award on SEARCH for this work (1987)
